Materials related to rehearsal and performance of the play, including a published copy (Vienna, n.d.; "Den Bühnen gegenüber als Manuscript gedruckt"), which has been annotated as a prompt-book; two versions of a scenario; and 13 handwritten role books, for the following parts: Norbert, Amtsschreiber; Willig, Pächter; Martha Willig; Leonhard; Tobias Wurm; Eva, Wurm's Schwester; Frau Fuchs, Wirthin zum Schwabenschenke; Anna, Kellnerin; Herbert, Gerichtsbeamter; Erigone; Trion, ein Knabe; Ludwig, Jäger, Norbert's Sohn; and Rosa. (One additional role is given in the published copy: Helios, der Sonnengott.) The published copy evidently dates from around the time of first publication, 1862 (no publisher name is discernible; printing by Leopold Sommer, Vienna); a note on the title page indicates that the play was well received when performed for the first time at the imperial-royal privileged ("k.k. priv.") Theater an der Wien. Music is attributed to Adolf Müller. (No music is included here.) The published copy, as well as 11 of the role books, are labeled by hand as the property of Theodor Bloch, who was active in the German-language theater in Philadelphia beginning around the mid 1870s, and ran a formal theater lending library from around 1880 to the mid 1890s. Two of the role books, those for Leonhard and Rosa, are in the hand of and signed by Oscar Niemann, who was an actor in the German-language theater in Philadelphia in the early 1880s (the role book for Leonhard is also labeled by hand on the front cover as Niemann's property). Names of actors and actresses written on the covers of role books reflect performances of the play at different times with approximately three different casts, corresponding evidently to performances advertised in Philadelphia in 1875, 1879, and 1880, as documented by two related playbills and a theater newspaper (see the index in the collection's register for details on those latter items, in folders 722, 688, and 691, respectively).
